Winner of the Cumbria Tourism Awards Bernard Gooch Award

Lindeth Howe’s MD ‘Surprised and Delighted’ to win the Cumbria Tourism award.

The managing director of Lindeth Howe Hotel and Mountain Goat Tours said he was “surprised and delighted” to win an award at last night’s Cumbria Tourism Awards.

Stephen Broughton, 67, from Bowness-on-Windermere, was this year’s recipient of the Bernard Gooch Tourism Personality of the Year Award at Cartmel Racecourse in front of a crowd of almost 400 people.

The Bernard Gooch Award is the award for the Cumbria Tourism personality of the year and is presented in memory of the first chairman of Cumbria Tourism’s commercial member's committee. The recipient is selected by the executive board from member nominations in recognition of their outstanding personal contribution over and above their normal duties to the visitor economy in Cumbria. Recent winners have included, UNESCO World Heritage Site bid leader Lord Clark of Windermere, Chef Simon Rogan, Fred Witton Organiser Paul Loftus.

Mr. Broughton said: “I was completely surprised and delighted to win this award last night. I am very much honoured to have received it."
“When we started up in business and bought the Goat in 1993 and the purchase of Lindeth Howe Hotel in 1998 our maxim was that we need to work in partnership with like-minded businesses and organizations to promote our wonderful area."
“In this county we found this to be easily fulfilled, we have worked successfully with organizations like Cumbria Tourism for almost 30 years and hope to continue to do so for a long time to come.”

The Bernard Gooch award was awarded to Mr. Broughton for his work with organizations including Cumbria Tourism and the LEP along with his dedicated work as a businessman in the county.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Tourism said: “Mr. Broughton works tirelessly to fly the Cumbrian flag throughout the UK and abroad and it is fantastic to thank him for all his hard work.”
