The Kyokusen Garden Seat

The Kyokusen Garden Seat

We asked the team at Sitting Spiritually to tell us a little more about this stunning piece of garden furniture.

In 2014 Sir Norman Stoller, one of the owners of Lindeth Howe, visited us at Chelsea Flower Show, where we were exhibiting.

The Kyokusen he saw on our stand featured the Heart Back, a new design for us and nominated as a finalist in Chelsea Product of the Year for 2014. He decided that our Kyokusen Garden Swing Seat would be ideal for his guests to sit and enjoy the fantastic views. So some weeks later the bespoke swing seat was delivered and has been regularly used and enjoyed by the guests.

In the very early days of Sitting Spiritually, Martin Young was very interested in his garden being developed along with Feng Shui principles, something that he still adheres to in the garden today. He had always loved the shape of the Torii Gate….a torii gate marks the approach and entrance to a Shinto shrine. It is the division between the physical and spiritual worlds and the Kyokusen was modeled on this.

Kyokusen is Japanese for “Curves in the air”. The Kyokusen Garden Swing Seat is cut from naturally curved Oak, so each one is unique, it is not steam bent or forced. This seat follows the natural curves of the individual piece of timber, so you could say it’s ‘contoured for comfort’.
