About Lindeth Howe

The Beatrix Potter connection & about us!

If you’re looking for a hotel in the Lake District with a unique history where you’ll receive a warm welcome, choose Lindeth Howe, once the home of English writer Beatrix Potter. As a team, we strive to ensure all our guests from wherever in the world they come from have a wonderful holiday and are excited to return time and time again.

Built in 1879 the hotel was intended as a holiday home for a wealthy mill owner from Manchester, when not in use by the gentleman he used to let his friends use it as a holiday home, One of the families was the Potter Family, they made such lovely memories whilst staying here, that when Beatrix's father died she bought the house for her mum to live in and her mum lived here until she died at which point the house was sold, this is how it ended up in private ownership as opposed to being donated to the National Trust. We have pictures of the house taken by Rupert (Beatrix's dad) whilst he was here and letters sent to Beatrix's publishers using Lindeth Howe as her correspondence address. Our logo is as it was written in Beatrix's handwriting by the kind permission of Penguin.

Our 30-plus-bedroom hotel is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the Lake District National Park and the beautiful surrounding area. Our lounge and bar area maintains our Beatrix Potter connection and is also a great place to enjoy a before or after-dinner drink with friends and family. Non-residents are always welcome.

We have been awarded the 'Cyclist Welcome', the 'Walkers Welcome' and the 'One Step Ahead' and also our long-standing 'Gold Award' from Visit England, and we proudly retain our 4-star and 2-rosette status from the AA.

In 2023 we enjoyed 2 'big wins', we were the winners of the Cumbria Tourism Wedding Venue of the Year and also, the prestigious Visit England Rose Award which is presented in recognition of service excellence, we were one of only 9 properties across the whole of Cumbria to be awarded this in 2023

The Gold Award from Visit England is awarded to celebrate accommodation establishments that outperform in their category, offering exceptional quality within their star rating. The awards help guests find special places where hosts go the extra mile, whatever the size, style, or star rating of the accommodation.

On the 27th of September 2021, we were very proud to welcome HRH The Earl of Wessex for dinner at Lindeth Howe along with some of the DofE awards team. The Earl had a wonderful evening and pictures to mark the occasion can be found in our history of the house section in the hallway of the hotel. What a very special moment it was to discover Lindeth Howe in the Court Circular on the Royal Family website.
