Mark has been our dedicated gardener since 2017 and is the sole caretaker of Lindeth Howe’s stunning six-acre grounds. His expertise and commitment ensure that every corner of the property is beautifully maintained, from the manicured lawns to the vibrant flower beds. Mark’s hard work plays a vital role in creating the serene, picturesque surroundings that guests love.
Married to our Deputy Manager, Clare, Mark’s life at Lindeth Howe is truly a family affair. In his spare time (when Clare allows it!), Mark enjoys an array of outdoor activities, including cycling, walking, birdwatching, and wild swimming. A keen cyclist, Mark has even completed the renowned Fred Whitton Challenge, one of the most grueling cycling events in the UK. If you're planning to bring your bike on holiday, he’s the perfect person to ask for advice, as he knows some of the best cycling routes around the Lake District.
Mark also has a passion for birdwatching and is an active member of the RSPB. He frequently visits Leighton Moss, a fantastic nature reserve on the outskirts of Carnforth. The site welcomes non-members and offers a great spot to grab some lunch, making it a perfect destination for bird enthusiasts or anyone seeking a peaceful escape. Mark is always happy to share his knowledge about local wildlife or recommend the best spots for birdwatching in the area.
An avid reader, Mark devours two to three books a week. His favorite authors include Will Self and Haruki Murakami, and his home boasts a mini-library that he is immensely proud of. In fact, Mark has been the largest contributor to Lindeth Howe’s lending library in the Morning Room, where guests can enjoy a selection of books during their stay. One of his favorite places to visit is the Old Pier second-hand bookshop in Morecambe, a true treasure trove for book lovers. With its labyrinthine passageways, it’s a place that requires plenty of time to explore—well worth a visit if you’re passing through.
In addition to his hobbies, Mark is currently studying for his RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) qualification, further enhancing his gardening expertise. The entire team at Lindeth Howe wishes him the best of luck as he works toward this accomplishment.
When he’s not tending to the gardens or cycling through the Lakes, Mark can often be found swimming in Windermere or Coniston or out on his stand-up paddleboard. Clare, ever supportive, is usually encouraging him from the sidelines—though not always joining in on the water-based activities herself!
Mark’s love for the outdoors extends to hiking and wild camping during the summer months, where he enjoys exploring the local hills and spending time immersed in nature. He knows some fantastic local walking routes and is always happy to share his recommendations for those looking to experience the beauty of the Lake District up close.
Mark’s dedication, knowledge, and adventurous spirit make him a cherished member of the Lindeth Howe family.
